The chain of ideas from social media gurus

28 June 2011Written by : Richard

Yeah, it’s been a while, been busy, blah blah blah. But I saw this and figured I would share. This perfectly sums up my feelings on what most of the “experts” are spewing on their blogs. As I’ve mentioned time and time again, most experts really are completely unaware of any of the data or specifics behind what they speak. They get their information from a blog post about a blog post that references a retweet of a blog post that came up with a conclusion based on the Techcrunch summary of some poorly put together survey or completely unrelated data extrapolation done by the like of Sysomos or Hubspot. And how better to sum it up then comparing it to “The Human Centipede.”

Oreo’s gimmick Facebook marketing, wait I’m not hating on it?

15 February 2011Written by : Richard

So my buddy Karl (his blog) tagged me on a Facebook comment talking about some ‘Oreo to Attempt Guinness World Records Mark for Most “Likes”‘ gimmick marketing stunt. He assumed that I would rip this apart which was a pretty safe assumption as I’m a giant hater of gimmick marketing. Weird thing though is that after I looked at it I think it might have been an okay use of gimmick marketing which I’ll break into lower.

Now I have to say this was the first time I heard about this publicity stunt so I’m not 100% up to speed on how much effort they are putting into this whole thing. They could have TV commercials or other ads I’m not aware of that would really blow up the costs that I am not aware of. Overall it doesn’t seem like they put a ton of effort into it from what I can tell, unless they really are pushing it elsewhere.

Constructive criticism for the Valpo Life video

07 February 2011Written by : Richard

I was just recently watching this video put together by the Valpo Life guys and just had a couple things to chime in on to hopefully help them. I know they are just starting up with this format so probably still working on this but wanted to give a couple quick pointers that I hope are taken as positive and not me ragging on them. There are some other organizations I obviously can’t say anything about because of that. :)

The badness

24 January 2011Written by : Richard

A friend sent me a list of a bunch of really bad web design shops in Northwest Indiana and after making a couple jokes about them I was asked to throw them all together for others to see. I didn’t make this list so don’t get on my ass if you are on it and upset, but I wouldn’t deny you probably deserve to be on it.

Some suggested that we put it up for a vote for who is the worst but these guys are all winners in my book. :)

Cybersquatted in a restaurant or how I wish they had SSL for conversations

20 December 2010Written by : Richard

Usually when you are worried about cybersquatters they are nameless people from cyberspace who are just doing it randomly, based off a misspelling, or who waited for you to accidentally forget to renew your domain. This is not one of those stories. This is the story of some local IT people who have pulled an extremely shady thing and why you should avoid them.

The story starts when my buddy Wade went to drop off a proposal to a local restaurant for a website. He had looked up 3 potential domain names for them which were all available before he went and picked up some takeout food. When he got there the owner picked the domain she wanted and signed the contract. Wade headed home, had dinner with his family, and then went to register the domain to find that it was no longer available. His jaw hit the floor and he called me in a panic. “How could this happen?” he asked.

Domain Theft – Hard Data

20 December 2010Written by : Richard

Instead of putting all this information into the main blog post I figured it would be nicer to just post all of the raw information here. The only modification done to this information was changing the domain to squatteddomain.com to protect the unfortunate restaurant that had this happen to them. Everything else is unchanged and exactly what was sent back and forth.

You aren’t Pablo Picasso let alone an artist

16 November 2010Written by : Richard

Picasso
See that guy over there? He’s Pablo Picasso. If you are to walk around and ask someone to name off a couple artists there is a pretty good chance he will be one of them. He has 3 of the 10 highest selling art pieces of all time. Who is comparable to that? Definitely not anyone I’ve ever heard use the “napkin story” to justify that they should be getting paid.

Ignorance and Misinformation is a Bipartisan Affair

02 September 2010Written by : Richard

So last night I was wandering around Twitter when I stumbled onto a tweet that caught my eye.

FYI: @GoDaddy sponsored Glenn Beck w/ads. We ask them to stop. They refuse. Their domain transfers quadruple as a result.less than a minute ago via TweetDeck

My first thought was “Wow, that is pretty awesome.” but like a responsible person I actually went to find the data that was used to prove this. Not that I should have been surprised but this was based on 1 data point (you have to scroll to the bottom to get to what they are referring to, I’ll get to how much more ridiculous that makes this in a bit) that the person had been given. They then proceeded to pat themselves on the back and take credit for this. This then got RT’d and RT’d by tons of people, no one even questioning the validity of the statement.
